49 arrested in 4-day enforcement blitz around western Singapore

SINGAPORE — A total of 45 women and four men were arrested in a four-day enforcement blitz involving the police, Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB), Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) and Singapore Customs.

The operation started on Tuesday (Dec 5) and ended on Friday, spanning multiple locations in western Singapore, including Bukit Batok, Chua Chu Kang, Jurong West and Woodlands, the police said in a statement on Saturday.

Thirty-seven of the 45 women were arrested for suspected involvement in vice-related activities at residential units and forested areas.

The remaining eight women and four men were arrested for suspected involvement in various offences such as cheating, being members of unlawful societies, immigration and employment-related offences.

Out of the three public entertainment outlets found to have breached their licenses under the Public Entertainment Act, two flouted Fire Safety Rules and Regulations

I used to visit some HDB brothels in Jurong area... definitely not a fantastic place to have sex. I still prefer visiting the private apartments especially in Geylang and Balestier areas.

Is about time the law and, enforcement clean up HDB estates. A bit of history, as usual. Back into 2000 where we have illegal VCD sellers at hdb markets, then pretty fast it upgrade to DVDs.

This fuckers were daring I had seen one such makeshift store opposite a police post. Of course I have also saw at least three raids at market places. Few more at GL I think was back into 2007? No records keeping.

Out of a sudden it stop! No, Sirs! It actually moved into PRC generation because PRC travel into industry estates, two or three times a week knocking at companies doors.

Finally, it stop I had no idea what happen. Maybe the PRC had moved into other crimes. This people had problems.

SINGAPORE: Unjustified attacks made against the police must be rebutted as they are a huge disservice to the officers who put their lives at risk every day to make Singapore, Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam said on Sunday (Dec 10), in a second post voicing his support for the police in their raids on illegal brothels.

Earlier on Saturday, Mr Shanmugam had written about the online criticism levelled against the police for multiple raids on brothels in the Rowell Road area, saying sympathy for victims of syndicates should not colour our views on what the police need to do.

His posts follow an online video made by a woman who had taken footage of the police during the raids, accusing them of excessive force, hurting the female sex workers, and having used the services of the women.

The post has since been removed.

“If she really believes these allegations, she should write in to lodge a complaint. I will direct an independent investigation. She should come forward and give credible evidence, and subject herself to being questioned as well,” Mr Shanmugam said in a Facebook post on Sunday evening.

“In many countries, unjustified attacks on Police have eventually led to the weakening of law enforcement. We do not intend to let that happen in Singapore,” he added.

In his Facebook post on Sunday, Mr Shanmugam also provided more details to the raids, saying there had been complaints about sex workers in the area and that a syndicate was seemingly in operation.

“Observations showed that there were lookouts deployed. And some of the sex workers appeared rather young. There was thus also the concern that the syndicate was exploiting underage youngsters,” Mr Shanmugam said.

In the raid on Dec 8, the police used force on doors that were locked, he said.

Some occupants tried to evade arrest, and one person injured himself while trying to escape.

In all, more than 20 persons, all foreigners, were arrested. Many were transgender sex workers. One 16-year-old underage male sex worker was also picked up.

Mr Shanmugam added that the police are concerned about human trafficking as well.

A Facebook post put up on Friday, Dec. 8, accusing the Singapore police of using excessive force while raiding unlicensed brothels at Rowell Road, has been removed.


Rebuttal

This was following two consecutive rebuttals issued on Dec. 9 and 10, by Law and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam, in response to the post.


Dec. 9



• Expressed support for the police in their recent raids on illegal brothels.

• A response to online comments suggesting police should not have broken down doors and wore masks.

• Explained that the police wear masks to hide their identities, as the syndicates behind these illegal brothels might retaliate.

• Urge the public not to allow sympathy for the victims to colour the views of what the police should do.

Dec. 10


• An explanation as to why unjustified attacks made against the police should be rebutted, as these do a huge disservice to the officers in blue who put their lives at risk to keep Singapore safe.

• Shared more details of the raid.

• Raid carried out in response to complaints about sex workers in the Rowell Road area.

• Woman who made the allegations against the police told to report the matter formally and be subjected to questioning.

What happened

The original Facebook post on Friday, Dec. 8, featured three videos and one photo.

They showed the police raiding brothels in Rowell Road, located in the Jalan Besar area.

The post was put up by Vanessa Ho, who is with Project X, a volunteer outreach group that protects sex workers’ rights.

The post mentioned the use of battering rams, sledgehammers and cutting devices to break down the doors of the brothels.

Ho also wrote: “This is what your taxpayers money are put to: groups of armed men terrorizing women.”

Even after Shanmugam’s first rebuttal Facebook post appeared on Dec. 9, Ho’s post stayed up and a follow-up update was posted, with more allegations made against the police.
