NATO fighter plane crash: Recap updates

Disaster: Black smoke billows from the scene of the deadly crash in central Spain
To recap on today's tragic events:

Ten people were killed and 13 injured when a Greek fighter plane crashed during NATO training in Spain, the defense ministry said.

The F-16 crashed about 3:20 p.m. (9.20 a.m. EST) as it took off at a training center in Albacete, 260 km (160 miles) southeast of the capital Madrid.

"The plane, part of the Tactical Leadership Program of NATO was carrying out a (training) exercise when during take-off the plane lost power, crashing into the parking area for planes, crashing into various planes that were parked there," the defense ministry said in a statement.

Two pilots on board were among the dead. Other pilots and mechanics were underneath the plane in the parking area when it crashed, Spanish media reported. France's defense ministry said that one Frenchman was killed and five seriously injured.

"I am deeply saddened," NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said in a statement.

"This is a tragedy which affects the whole NATO family. I express my heartfelt condolences to the loved ones and the nations of those who lost their lives, and I wish a speedy recovery to the injured."

Up to ten people are believed to have been injured after a Greek fighter jet crashed during take-off at a military airbase in Spain.

Firefighters and emergency services are at the crash site as dramatic pictures from the scene show a F16 fighter jet engulfed in flames.

The crash happened at the Los Llanos airbase in Albacete in central Spain, the Defence Ministry said.

Reports suggest between four to ten people have been injured.

'Two dead and 10 injured'
Reports now suggest two people have died and ten are injured following the crash.

The plane involved was a NATO F-16 fighter jet, it is believed.

Black smoke emanating from the crash site is visible from some distance.

This picture was posted on Twitter with the caption: "In the background, the air base at Alabacete. Doesn't look good."

'Two pilots killed in crash'
Spanish newspaper El País is reporting that tragically both F-16 pilots have died as a result of the crash.

Ten people are injured, of which six are seriously hurt. Four others have minor injuries.

It is believed the fighter jet came down into a parking area for other planes after failing to take off properly from the military base.

It exploded on impact prompting a huge blaze.

'Two confirmed dead are Greek pilots'
Spanish radio station Cadena Ser is also reporting that both pilots are deceased and that they were both of Greek nationality.

This is has not been confirmed at the moment.

This photo which is being widely shared on social media further reveals the severity of the crash.

'13 now injured'
Reports suggest the number of injured in the crash is now 13.

A further three more casualties have been taken to hospital to be treated for gas inhalation.

Fighter jet taking part in NATO project
The Greek fighter jet was part of the Hellenic Air Force and involved in a NATO project called the Tactical Leadership Programme.

Ten other nations are involved in the project, including Britain.

It is not clear at this time if any British people been affected by the crash.

'Death toll rises to five'
The death toll has now risen to five, according to Spanish newspaper ABC.

A number of the other casualties have suffered serious burn injuries, the paper adds.

Some video footage which has surfaced online here from the scene of the crash.

It has caused a major blaze which emergency services are still trying to deal with.

The crash happened at Los Llanos military airbase which is about 80km outside of the Spanish city of Albacete.

'10 dead in plane crash - Defence Minister to visit scene'
Cadena Ser is now reporting 10 people have died as result of the plane crash.

The Spanish Defence Minister Pedro Morenés is said to be on route to the crash site.

There has been no suggestion so far this tragedy is anything other than an accident.

It is believed the fighter jet failed during take-off and crash landed into an area whether other aircraft were parked up.

Jet 'lost power then crashed into other planes'
According to Spain's Defence Ministry, the fighter jet "lost power" during take-off.

It then crashed into into a number of other planes which were waiting to take part in a training exercise.

The disaster happened at around 3.30pm local time today.
