Tanjong Pagar MRT station hit by freon gas leak during morning peak hour

Published 40 min ago

Ng Huiwen

SINGAPORE - Commuters on an east-bound train were forced to alight at Tanjong Pagar MRT station on Thursday morning (June 7), after white smoke engulfed the platform due to a freon gas leak.

In response to queries, transport operator SMRT, which runs the East West Line, said that staff had detected the smoke from beneath the train while it was stationary at Tanjong Pagar MRT station at about 9.45am.

SMRT's preliminary investigations show that the leak was due to a leaking air-conditioning compressor that released freon gas.

Freon gas - a common refrigerant used in air-conditioners - is non-toxic, but interacts with moisture in the air to form an odourless white smoke.

"As a safety precaution, all passengers onboard the affected train were asked to alight and board the next train," said Ms Margaret Teo, vice-president of corporate communications.

She added that the affected train was withdrawn from service for further checks.

Account manager Roland Yeo told The Straits Times that the platform was "quite smoky", and the source of the smoke appeared to be from the rear of the train he was riding.

The 41-year-old, who was heading to work at Raffles Place, said that the smell had not been obvious from where he was, in the middle of train.

He only noticed the smoke after the train pulled into Tanjong Pagar MRT station and he was asked to alight.

Simultaneous disruptions in train service along NSL and EWL on Friday evening

Published on 2018-06-09 by Martha Soezean

Train service was disrupted again on Friday evening (8 Jun), this time along both the North South Line (NSL) and East West Line (EWL).

No official information was given by the SMRT despite the Land Transport Authority's requirement that train operators must inform commuters of any delay exceeding 10 minutes through mainstream and social media.

According to commuters, the fault seems to have been caused by signalling fault.

Commuters posted information on TATA SMRT Facebook group of the two delays since around 6pm:

Paul Lee wrote: ⚠ "North South and East West Lines - Signal Fault 🕘 Due to a signal fault, trains will be traveling slower. (Station announcement) Info from telegram app of land transport guru."

Swee Thian Sim wrote: "Stuck in train before Aljunied now. Signal fault."

Briggs Cudal wrote: "Green line going to Pasir Ris a bit slow..."

Cynthia Khoo wrote: "Signal fault! Stucked at Aljunied MRT going towards Pasir Ris for past 5 mins. Looks major! Better consider alternate transport."

Jutaz Choon wrote: "Stuck at Lavendar. Announcement say delay for 'ten minutes'."

Kamal Mohd is at Raffles Place; he wrote: "Signaling fault now ( 18:22hrs) still in the tunnel.."

Swee Thian Sim who informed earlier above that he was stuck in train before Aljunied posted further information that the situation was getting better:

Swee Thian Sim wrote: "Looking better now... heading to Bugis."

Can Police explain why naked foreigner not charged under Public Order and Nuisance Act?

Published on 2018-06-08 by Correspondent

It was reported in mainstream media yesterday ('Woman, 35, arrested after stripping nude at Pioneer MRT station', 7 Jun) that a 35-year-old Caucasian woman was arrested on Wednesday (6 Jun) night at Pioneer MRT station, after she stripped herself naked at the station platform.

The police said it received a call for assistance at around 10.30pm on Wednesday.

Subsequently, according to the media report, the foreigner was arrested "under the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) Act".

Photos of the naked foreigner were already circulating on social media after the incident. In one photo, she appeared to be wrapping her arms around her male companion at the platform.

The male companion, also Caucasian, was seen to be together with her.

Mental Health (Care and Treatment) Act

According to Section 7 of the Mental Health (Care and Treatment) Act, a police officer can apprehend any person who is reported to be "mentally disordered" and is believed to be "dangerous to himself or other persons". The officer will then take the person to see a medical practitioner as soon as possible.

Caucasian woman strips naked at Pioneer MRT, arrested under Mental Health Act

A SMRT staff tried to cover her body.

By Mandy How | June 7, 2018

Here are the censored images:

A SMRT personnel could be seen holding a large cloth against the partially-clothed woman, who had a semblance of modesty as she was still wearing one sock.

She was holding on to the wrists of another man whom she appears to know.

In another photo, the woman could be seen with her arms around the man’s shoulder, while the SMRT staff looks at the clothes strewn on the floor.

When contacted by Mothership, SMRT said the case is now with the police.

The police confirmed a call for assistance at Pioneer MRT Station was received on June 6, 2018 at about 10.30pm.

They revealed that the woman was subsequently arrested under the Mental Health Act.

According to the act, a police officer is duty-bound to apprehend any person who is believed to be mentally disordered and/ or dangerous to himself or other persons.

He is also required to take the mentally disordered person, along with a report of the facts of the case, to a medical practitioner.

No service along BPLRT on Saturday morning due to power failure

Published on 2018-06-23 by Martha Soezean

A day before the last of Sundays closure (all Sundays from 15 Apr to 24 Jun), the Bukit Panjang LRT (BPLRT) experienced train breakdown due to power fault this morning (23 Jun) .

At 5:51am, John Robert Lee shared a post from MRT Singapore Service Information that the service on BPLRT was suspended, fee bus rides are available:

John Robert Lee wrote: "For those commuting on BPLRT now, please be aware that service on the BPLRT is SUSPENDED, owing to a power failure. Free bus rides are available to replace BPLRT."

And at 5:53am the Singapore Mass Rapid Transport informed on a tweet that no train service was available on BPLRT, due to a power fault:

There was no complain from commuters on social media, probably because it was still early and the breakdown happened on a weekend.

Such good service .
